One of the biggest problems I see with their theological understanding is that they separate Mary from Jesus, putting all their emphasis on Mary to the almost total neglect of Jesus. Mary is seen as the "back door" into heaven, the one who will make it easy for them. Unfortunately, far too many American Lutherans never learned much about their own liturgical heritage and historic practices and piety and so assume that if anything even remotely "looks Catholic" or "sounds Catholic" then surely it is.
