Oh, My Goodness.... Put Your Foot Down, Indeed!

You can read the Internet Monk's post here.  I really don't want to repeat it since it would require also repeating the words to this pathetic example of a contemporary worship song that is all over the charts and the praise band circuit...

But you should probably go here and read it for yourself.

Suffice it to say that his conclusion is worth repeating:

Build congregations, not audiences.

Make disciples, not entertainment or emotional thrill seekers.

As with all areas of ministry, lead people toward maturity.

Treat worship music as another form of speaking and hearing God’s own Word.

Honor the music of the church by demanding quality and depth and artistic integrity.

Put your foot down.

  1. Pastor, the problem as I see it is that there is a whole generation (maybe two) in their twenties and thirties, that don't understand what you mean when you speak of 'music with quality, depth and artistic integrity'.

They believe that the music referred to from the Internet Monk IS a valid form of speaking and hearing Gods word--and the proof is in the popularity.

I have no idea how to demonstrate to them how false their ideas are and how huge the differences between the genres. The idea of relativism has just about destroyed any chance of convincing many of them that something is wrong with their 'contemporary' Christian music. And pointing them to another choice such as the time honored hymns usually just makes them angry. I've about given up arguing with anyone about this anymore as it seems the war is just about lost.

  2. According to the Book of Revelation, the war is won. It just looks really lost at times. The time will come when we'll see that the church that married the spirit of the age has become a widow. People will look back on this narcissistic age with disdain and thank God there were pockets of sanity which endured and passed on the faith of the ages.
