The Church of Sweden today announced that Antje Jackelén has been elected as the next archbishop. The very liberal theologian had been teaching at ELCA’s Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago before being elected bishop of Lund in 2006.
Meanwhile, Church of Sweden female priest Eva Hamberg announced over the weekend that she is quitting the Church of Sweden, finally finding it too apostate. Her decision came in the wake of an interview with the five final candidates for archbishop in which none of the five would say that Jesus provides a better path to God than Mohammed.
The wonderful hymns are sung now as a memory of what was but has been surrendered on the altar of modernity. God rest the Swedish saints who were among those who first taught me the faith. I am glad that they can no longer be harmed by the empty word that has replaced the saving truth that was once spoken and heard with faith and joy.
