Looking at Lent. . .

Instead of giving up silly things for Lent (chocolate, ice cream, kidney beans. . . ), why not give up something of substance?  Give up not going to Church.  Though we think of this in different terms, not going to Church is itself an active habit and not simply a momentary choice.  This Lent, why not give up the old habit of staying at home, sleeping in, or even watching a service online and just go to Church?  You do not develop a taste for worship by absenting yourself and you do not learn to pray by not praying.  Give it six weeks.  Go to Church (and Bible study and Sunday school) for the next six Sundays in a row.  Try hard not to miss for any reason.  If you are not a church going Christian, start now.  Don't expect fire works but listen, pay attention, hear the voice of God in His Word and come to the altar rail to receive His body and blood.  It may not be fire works but it is fire for the Holy Spirit is at work in those means of grace.  Give up your habit of not attending and start with six Sundays in Lent.  You can do it.  After Lent makes its climax in Palm Sunday and the Passion reading that begins Holy Week, I am sure that you will stay in it for Easter.  Who walks out of the movie before it is over, right?  And I am confident of one more thing.  Give it six weeks and throw in Easter as well and a new habit will be born.  Nurture that good habit and blessings will flow.  Go ahead, you can do this.  Start on Sunday!!!
