The Vagina Monologues.... Coming to a house of worship near you!

Just when taste could not be diluted any further, we find a new low.  It seems some female Canadian clerics are going to put on the famous Vagina Monologues in Church.  Now the location is the aged and traditional Christ Church Cathedral of the Diocese of Niagara built a hundred and fifty years ago.  Suffice it to say, no one then expected such a use.  It is a shame to unravel their more pious expectations for a church and a cathedral.  But if you can, you must (at least according to the social agenda of the day).

Bet you can't wait for the language of the Prayer Book and its Cranmerian legacy to give way to the sound of various monologues written from the perspective of the vagina.  The theme common throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality. An example of one of the monologues is I Was Twelve, My Mother Slapped Me: a chorus describing many young women's and girls' first menstrual period.  Each year another monologue is added.

Surely won't be a problem getting the kiddies to go to church for that, now, will it...   Ahhhhhh, so sad.... I wonder if this is what Henry had in mind so long ago... or what Elizabeth II might approve in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of her accession to the throne... or what good taste and common sense might say... not here, folks.... not here.

Ironically, this might be exactly what "Henry had in mind" since it was his fixation on his own genitalia that started the CoE!

The concept of sacred space, that is space set apart for holy purposes, seems to have been for the most part lost in recent years. Thus we see no harm in using our worship space for concerts (often quite profane), lectures, theaters, often turned into gymnasiums, volley ball courts, etc. The idea that something is "reserved for God" just seems like a waste to those who don't really believe that God is real.
